Continental Field Supervisor
Summary: Responsible for all current year in season operations of Continental based staffed deep field camps and science traverses. Recruits and hires all deep field camp personnel. Coordinates field camp cargo procurements, movements, tracking, storage, and inventory in conjunction with Aviation Operations and USAP Cargo personnel. Integrates with all internal stakeholders regarding field camp planning.
GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
Off-Ice
- Hires deep field camp personnel for camps under their jurisdiction and may help with other camps as necessary. Conducts interviews, answers candidate questions, track physical qualification progress, and schedule TDY/telecommute and trainings. Coordinates with work center supervisors as appropriate. Collaborates with GSC and UTMB for positions as needed. Communicates camp life reality and expectations.
- Procures and tracks field camp and project related equipment and supplies. Places purchase requisitions and develops spreadsheet with Port Hueneme and McMurdo Station delivery dates.
- Coordinates with Project Managers, Aviation Operations and Science Support Planning to determine air support requirements. Determines field camp cargo loads, fuel needs, priorities, and schedule.
- Prepares field camp iSIPs and works with Camp Managers to ensure all necessary equipment is requested. Creates population and fuel spreadsheets for large deep field camps.
- Creates and updates field camp Standard Operating Procedures and Field Camp Supervisorandbook. Includes field safety protocols and emergency response plans.
- Coordinates and schedules resources and labor requirements with other work centers, such as IT, FEMC, Operations, etc.
- May work semi-independently, as a team member, or supervise TDY contract staff as circumstances dictate. Writes employee performance expectations/evaluations, as appropriate.
- Reviews scientific research requirements and assist with planning and scheduling support. Participates in SIP reviews and planning meetings.
- May assist the Field Manager and Project Managers in out year plans if required.
- May be assigned science implementation duties as workload allows and at Field Manageriscretion
- Organizes and plans camp manager and traverse supervisor TDY timing, priorities and tasking in coordination with PMequirements.
On-Ice
- Directly supervises all deep field camp managers/supervisors and traverse supervisors. May supervise project coordinators as appropriate.
- May serve as on-ice POC for select grantee groups and attend in-briefs, if required.
- Responsible for safety topics at deep field camp meetings in McMurdo Station, including field safety procedures and protocols.
- Communicates frequently with field camps for daily & weekly planning and documents previous weekccomplishments.
- Produces daily and weekly reports of camp operations at request of the Field Manager.
- Executes project plans in coordination with the Field Manager, Assistant Field Manager, Science Project Manager.
- Sets priorities for deep field camp flight movements.
- Interacts with National Science Foundation, other sub-contractors (e.g. air support providers), military, other agency officials, and Antarctica New Zealand, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
- Conducts inventories, general organization, and mapping of field camp related cargo and supplies staged in McMurdo Station to include field medical. Coordinates with Supply as appropriate for the various locations and items.
- Schedules field camp staff trainings in McMurdo Station. Provides camp staff with pertinent information throughout field season, such as HR, finance, and redeployment, updates.
- Works with science teams at field camps to provide required support, troubleshoot issues, and is involved in decision making. May handle and resolve difficult situations such as personnel issues or resource limitations.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the field camps.
- Communicates expectations to camp and traverse staff
- Conducts and documents pre-season expectation meetings with camp and traverse managers
- Completes mid-season and end of season performance evaluations for camp and traverse managers
- Oversees training and staff development for camp and traverse mangers and staff
- Submits required documentation for accidents, incidents and near misses in a timely manner
- Ensures quality camp and traverse record keeping and end of season reporting (and makes sure pertinent camp information gets passed along to the next manager)
- Performs other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS: - BA/BS degree is required. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
- Valid Drivers license required. Current Wilderness First Responder & ICS 100 & 200 required.
- Three years experience in resource planning is required.
- Three years experience must be in supervision or management of employees is required.
- Must have experience in remote field camp operations.
- Must have additional experience in any combination of the following: weather reporting, equipment maintenance, risk management, aviation, construction, fuel operations, and/or logistics.
- Experience working with aircraft supported field programs is preferred.
- Two seasons of direct field camp experience working in Polar climates is preferred
- Must demonstrate excellent customer service background.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills along with the ability to work well under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite and working knowledge of basic computer applications is required (ex. cargo tracking software).
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
- Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
- Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
- Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
- Must participate in community programs, such as se-mousehores), sy-pickingleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
- US citizenship or US Permanent Resident Status is required.
