Position Description SOCIOLOGY/Health Care Organizations - The Department of Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, academic-year Assistant Professor of Sociology with expertise in health care organizations, social welfare institutions, and race and ethnicity to begin September 13, 2018. The assistant professorship is associated with the sociology program in the Department of Social Sciences. Candidates will teach undergraduate classes in sociology, health care organizations, social welfare institutions, and race and ethnicity. The typical teaching assignment is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research and service expectations, and with a significant reduction in course load in the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. A Ph.D. or other appropriate doctoral degree in one of the following is required: sociology, social work, or closely related field. Candidates must have completed the doctorate by June 2018. University teaching experience and evidence of an active research agenda are expected. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad appreciation of the field from a social justice and/or public policy perspective; develop classes on health-care organizations; and teach classes on social work and social welfare institutions, race and ethnic relations, qualitative research methods, and comparative societies (Introduction to Sociology). Demonstrated success or evidence of potential to excel in teaching is essential. The successful candidate will prepare students for work as professionals and social workers in non-profit, for-profit, and governmental organizations and social movements; conduct research in related fields; publish their findings in scholarly venues; participate in service at the department, college and/or university; advise majors and minors; and supervise senior projects for sociology majors. They will be asked to contribute to the university's mission, "Learn By Doing," and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The College of Liberal Arts is committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal in their teaching and scholarly work are encouraged to apply and identify their strengths and experiences in these areas.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Cal Poly is committed to the teacher-scholar model. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogical skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholars, faculty should be engaged in scholarly work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, it is appropriate for faculty to perform service activities at all levels of the University. Faculty should build collaborative relationships across the University and with colleagues at other universities.
