Salary Range
Salary commensurate with background and experience of the individual selected. Position Description The Facilities Management and Development (FMD) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the maintenance and development of university campus facilities. The Supervisor of Environmental Health and Safety (Supervisor) works under the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Department of FMD, who is delegated the authority by the university president to develop, implement and maintain the university environmental, health and safety program.
Under the leadership of the EH&S Director, the Supervisor provides day-to-day supervisory duties to support the EH&S and FMD mission and operational activities. The Supervisor collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure EH&S programs and activities are aligned with and support the mission of the university's administration, colleges, and auxiliary organizations. The Supervisor works closely with the EH&S Director and staff to strengthen organizational cohesion and establish a client services business model to effectively engage university managers, faculty, staff and students to understand their organizational culture and operational requirements. The Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a positive, supportive and productive climate among the EH&S staff. The Supervisor will be involved in development of position descriptions, EH&S policies and procedures, compliance surveys, regular inspections, and consultations with colleges, departments and other stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree or equivalent AND four (4} years progressively responsible experience in environmental, health and safety, regulatory compliance and injury prevention programs. Two (2) years of experience supervising EH&S staff.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
- Working knowledge of and experience in environmental and safety compliance including regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze existing and proposed laws and regulations for applicability to university operations and use appreciable judgment to continually improve the programs, policies and procedures on campus as they relate to environmental health and safety.
- Demonstrated experience in establishing program and policy goals, structuring the processes for implementation and assessing ongoing efforts to ensure goals are being met.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise professional employees using up-to-date management theory knowledge, clear and concise communications, active listening and professional development planning strategies.
- Ability to represent the university and its interests in a professional and courteous manner.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to apply modern management and administrative techniques to coordinate and manage a diverse staff including the ability to enhance performance through training and professional development, coaching, and evaluation.
- Knowledge of and ability to utilize campus resources during emergency situations, understand problems from a broad perspective, discern underlying causes of issues and conceive of new approaches when developing solutions.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, electronic work tracking, learning management systems, and internet as well as online calendaring and email.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing and a thorough mastery of English grammar, spelling and punctuation with a demonstrated ability to proofread and edit.
- Demonstrated ability to use tact, diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
- Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
- Master Degree in occupational safety, health or environmental sciences.
- Holds professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CPE.
- Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Special Conditions (Staff)
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
