POSITION SUMMARY: The Coding Supervisor oversees the daily operations and work flow of the Coding Department in coordination with the HIM Operations and Coding Manager. The coding supervisor is responsible for assisting in the establishment of policies, applicable departmental procedures, system and workflow efficiencies as well as implementing changes as needed.
POSITION EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervising inpatient and/or outpatient hospital coding workflow in assignment of ICD-10-CM and CPT codes as applicable
- Monitors and assesses performance of coding staff to ensure timely, accurate coding of inpatient discharges, ambulatory surgery encounters, Emergency Department encounters and diagnostic services as applicable.
- Assures delivery of coding staff education and training.
- Informs, educates and coordinates with other Revenue Cycle and Patient Financial Services staff regarding coding and charge capture process for facility encounters.
- Monitors and oversees the activities of Coding Associates to ensure optimal productivity and quality.
- Oversees, coordinates and participates in the training of new hires.
- Assists with preparation of schedules and assesses daily staffing resources, shifting as necessary.
- Provides training and leadership to Associates as needed.
- Maintains and assists in the daily management of the discharges not final coded (DNFC) list.
- Serves as a key component in the planning and implementation of new initiatives for Coding along with the Manager.
- Develops and maintains departmental procedures for Coding functions along with the Manager.
- Exercises independent judgment with daily problem solving.
- Collaborates with the Manager to facilitate operational changes to meet needs of our customers.
- In coordination with the Manager, evaluates staff performance on an annual basis. Accurately measures and evaluates staff performance, productivity and quality measures and assures that staff is following and meeting departmental standards.
- Coordinates the schedule with call-ins on a daily basis.
- Prepare, oversees and approves work schedules.
- In coordination with the Manager, recruits, interviews and makes recommendations to fill team member vacancies
- Completes training with new team members
Minimum Qualifications - Associates Degree or higher
- RHIA, RHIT and/or CCA Required
- At least 3-5 years of coding experience in an acute care hospital
- Previous Management/Supervisor experience preferred
