The Program Assistant for Academic Life, under the supervision of the Executive Director/Department Chair of the High Sierra Semester, is an 8-month position that provides academic support for the High Sierra community. This position aims to help High Sierra students connect their academic, spiritual and interpersonal worlds by emphasizing the role of academics in the development of community in this unique mountain setting.
Required Education Required Experience - Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT certification.
- Must hold, or be willing to obtain, a California Commercial Drivericense with a Passenger Endorsement.
Primary Duties/Essential Functions
- Onsite living area support and crisis management.
- Participate in scheduled Callty coverage.
- Assist in the coordination of living area programming opportunities.
- Interpret/communicate University policies and provide occasional disciplinary intervention.
- Assist in coordination of Student Leader Training.
- Assist in overseeing and mentoring student leaders.
- Manage the High Sierra Gear Shed
- Lead a small group Bible Study.
- Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Skills - Ability to use the computer with Windows or Macintosh interface including Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, etc.
- Strong background in the humanities and desire to promote interdisciplinary dialogue, thinking and mentoring.
- Ability to work with faculty in academic community formation.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience in counseling students.
- Demonstrates professionalism with high regard for the integrity of the individual student. Ability to communicate effectively, written and verbally.
- Good organizational skills with attention to details.

- Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.
- Willingness to be available evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrate a desire to grow both personally and professionally.
- Ability to learn procedures and retain information.
- Be in agreement with the Christian mission of the university and exhibits a mature Christian faith.
Physical Demands - Ability to lift, pull, grasp, bend, and reach.
- Hearing and speaking demands.
- Ability to walk, run, carry a backpack (up to 50 lbs.) at high elevation and hike up to 8 miles a day.
- Intermittent sitting and standing.
- Ability to conduct business at other locations on campus.
- Ability to drive to off-site locations.
- Must hold a California Class B (Commercial) Drivericense.
Visual Demands
- Computer monitor, reading, assess conditions of living areas, driving.
Environment
- Pleasant room setting, comfortable temperature, varied weather conditions when outdoors and traveling.
Technologies - Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
Compensation Grade 1: $11.00/hour - $14.30/hour
