Position Description GEOGRAPHY - Full-time, academic year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geography, in the Social Sciences Department, College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, to begin September 13, 2018. The assistant professorship in geography would be associated with the anthropology-geography program in the Department of Social Sciences. The position requires expertise in geospatial technologies related to environmental and/or social applications. Regional specialization is open, but a focus on Africa or Asia is preferred. PhD in Geography or closely related discipline from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required at the time of appointment. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate was completed prior to the start of appointment.
Teaching assignments include courses in human-environment interactions, GIS, remote sensing, general education courses in Geography, and specialized courses designed by the candidate. Ability to offer courses in advanced GIS, remote sensing, and cartography is preferred. The typical teaching load is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations, and with a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Non-instructional duties include engaging in productive research and scholarship, service, and academic advising. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
