Vice-President/Senior Counsel role – based in Singapore
You will be part of a dynamic and driven team of lawyers in the General Counsel Organization responsible for supporting American Express businesses in JAPA markets. A. Accountabilities 1. Support Business Development. Support new business initiatives and product development work , including new issuing and acquiring models, digital products and functionalities, etc. Review and advise on product launch, marketing, and advertising initiatives and executions.
2. Deals and Strategy. Support major deals and business strategy initiatives with creative, proactive and business outcomes-focused advice, including M&A matters, strategic alliances and the structuring and negotiation of critical deals.
3. Manage Business Contracts. Draft, review, negotiate and amend all types of business and licensing contracts for the company. Provide advice and assistance to management on standard agreements and terms and conditions of business or business processes.
4. Manage Regulatory Development. Work with regulatory team to monitor proposed changes to legal requirements in JAPA markets which impact American Express. This includes financial services and payment systems regulation, consumer protection, e-money,competition, data-related and outsourcing laws. Analyse proposed changes to determine impact. Resolve issues of interpretation. Communicate impact and recommended implementation steps proactively to the business, Compliance and other stakeholders. Advise on implementation issues as required.
5. Manage Dispute Resolution. Provide advice on and management of litigation, disputes and claims, whether as plaintiff or defendant. Try to seek constructive, “win-win” solutions in the interests of upholding the American Express brand and shareholder value.
6. General. Provide general guidance and advice to management on legal entity governance, business structuring and all other legal and regulatory matters that arise in a Fortune 500 company.
7. Reporting, administrative and GCO activities.Qualifications
1. Communication. First class oral and written communication skills, in particular the ability to explain complex legal matters clearly and concisely to non-specialists.
2. Professional poise. Maintains grace under pressure and demonstrates the ability to impart discipline and calm to stressful situations. Holds their own in live discussions where differing views are expressed. A persuasive advocate who is not afraid to convey unwelcome messages yet lays out a path to practical solutions. 3. A self-starter who takes ownership. Takes the initiative to learn independently rather than passively. Sees what needs to be done and then does it. Takes responsibility for understanding and solving problems. 4. Qualified and admitted/licensed lawyer in Commonwealth jurisdiction. Candidates should have at least 15 years post-qualification experience in payments, financial services, banking, technology or a related field. Prior in-house experience with financial institution or multi-national corporation preferred. 5. Energetic and practical application of legal skills and knowledge to business situations and problems. 6. Build effective relationships and credibility throughout the company. 7. Manage workload by careful prioritization and personal organization. 8. Stay abreast of developments in critical legal areas: payment systems, consumer, privacy etc.
