Position Description ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, & SOCIETY. The College of Liberal Arts, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, CA, seeks applications for an Assistant Professor in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) starting September 13, 2018. Candidates must demonstrate the ability/potential to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to the operation of the STS minors and the emerging Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) major. Although applications are sought from any traditional liberal arts discipline, we are particularly interested in applicants with explicit backgrounds in STS and who may find their tenure homes in one of the following departments: Communication Studies, Political Science, and/or Social Sciences (Anthropology, Geography, and Sociology).
The typical teaching load is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations and with a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research/scholarship/creative activity and professional development. For this position, teaching and service assignments will be divided between the interdisciplinary programs and the home department in proportions agreeable to all parties. The successful candidates will teach courses such as Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society; Advanced Project-Based Learning in Science, Technology, and Society; Interdisciplinary Research Methods; Senior Project; and/or discipline-specific courses as determined by areas of expertise and departmental need. Outcomes assessment and Learn by Doing are important components of the University curriculum. Faculty members are also expected to engage in service and to provide academic and professional advising to students. The successful candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration. Continued professional development is expected.
Cal Poly is committed to the teacher-scholar model. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogical skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholars, faculty should be engaged in scholarly work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, it is appropriate for faculty to perform service activities at all levels of the university. Faculty should build collaborative relationships across the University and with colleagues at other universities.
The College of Liberal Arts is committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal in their teaching and scholarly work are encouraged to apply and identify their strengths and experiences in these areas. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
