Position Description Cal Poly is looking to recruit a Credential Analyst Trainee in the School of Education. The successful applicant will work closely with students and faculty to support the success of our teacher candidates as they navigate the many requirements associated with obtaining a California teaching credential.
The Position Under direct supervision the Credential Analyst Trainee will acquire the essential knowledge, skills and abilities to perform work comparable to the work of a Credential Analyst I. The incumbent will be reviewed at 6 months and 12 months to ensure that they are capable of performing at the level of a Credential Analyst I, in addition to being capable of reviewing, analyzing, evaluating and processing applications for teaching, administrative, and specialist credentials, and for the School of Education's Master's degree programs.
The Manager
The successful applicant will report to Prof. Kevin Taylor, Director in the School of Education. Taylor has been at Cal Poly for 18 years, starting as a teacher educator in physical education as a faculty member in Kinesiology. Prior to becoming director two years ago, Taylor was department chair in Kinesiology.
The Team The School of Education collaborates with many different units across campus so the broader team has many levels and includes faculty across the university. The core team of staff within the School of Education comprises 5 people each of whom reports to the Director; the successful applicant will be one of two credential analysts and between them they will form the Credential Analyst team.
The Department The School of Education (SOE) offers a range of educational programs including Master's Degrees and Teaching Credentials. The SOE delivers its programs in partnership with many departments in three colleges across Cal Poly, the Center for Engineering, Science and Mathematics Education, in addition to a great many school districts and county offices of education in our service area.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: One year of experience involving academic, administrative, fiscal or statistical record-keeping and processing.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
- Ability to interpret, communicate, and correctly apply overlapping policies, rules and regulations to inform decision making.
- Ability to quickly learn the California Education Code and other such regulations pertaining to the issuance of the various credentials and certificates for public school teaching and service in California. Ability to evaluate academic qualifications, determine credit to be granted toward credentials and report student status using applicable policies.
- Knowledge of general office procedures, methods, and practices. Knowledge of the techniques used in processing information.
- Ability to quickly learn, CSU, Title V, campus and SOE graduate program policies and procedures and to identify problems and research solutions.
- Ability to learn campus and SOE policies regarding all phases of the graduation and program completion process.
- Ability to listen, comprehend, and communicate both new and on-going information acquired from related trainings, conferences, and workshops.
- Ability to learn the process of identifying and reporting student credentialing issues in a clear and concise manner to students, program coordinators, deans, and other campus offices.
- Strong communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing; thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Ability to identify, examine, and analyze a problem and produce a creative and workable solution.
- Demonstrated ability to handle highly sensitive interpersonal situations, establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships and to coordinate with others on shared projects to achieve established objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, and plan, organize, coordinate and perform long range activities while responding to a broad range of varying needs as they arise.
- Ability to check and verify complex records and detailed information for compliance with established criteria. Ability to write correspondence and prepare standard reports; demonstrate thoroughness and accuracy; interpret and apply written regulations; and maintain confidentiality of information.
- Ability to use negotiation and persuasion skills to achieve results and expedite projects and ensure faculty and staff cooperation in school and college expectations.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
- Ability to initiate, establish and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the university with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

- Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Special Conditions (Staff)

- Must be able to safely move file boxes weighing up to 50 pounds from a hand truck or cart
- Must will willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development (such as CTC/CSU/CCAC sponsored training conferences and workshops).
- Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
- This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the Executive Order 1083 requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
