Job Description: Position Overview: The AVP, Compliance (Group Benefits), is the Business Unit Compliance Officer (BUCO) for the SLF U.S. employee benefits business unit. In this role, the BUCO will identify compliance requirements applicable to the business, ensure appropriate communication of compliance requirements; provide monitoring of processes and procedures designed to achieve compliance with applicable requirements; assist management in identifying and managing compliance risks relevant to business activities; and report to the SCO and business management on the state of compliance within the business. The BUCO will be responsible for establishing and implementing a proactive regulatory risk management framework in support of the business unit. The BUCO should have sufficient business and technical experience to provide sound tactical and strategic advice to management. The BUCO will also encourage employees to identify, assess and communicate regulatory concerns as well maintain compliance requirements. This position reports directly to the U.S. Business Group Senior Compliance Officer (Vice President mpliance).
The role manages and leads a team of Compliance professionals who may be co-located or remotely located.
The position is located in the Wellesley U.S. office, but with occasional travel to other locations including Kansas City, MO; Windsor, CT; Toronto, Canada may be required.
Position Responsibilities: - Maintains technical knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.
- Provides pro-active advice on legal, regulatory or industry best-practice trends to the business.
- Participates in and contributes to business unit meetings as required; including executive leadership meetings and business practice committee discussions.
- Prepares reports, memoranda and correspondence for the SCO and/or senior management that assists them in describing regulatory risks and controls.
- Leads the team in regulatory examinations or inquiries. Engages regulators as appropriate to assess/address issues and concerns. Escalates issues as appropriate to the SCO and/or senior management.
- Develops, enhances and improves compliance procedures or process documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements and/or company policies.
- Communicates changes in compliance requirements to management and staff.
- Sets e from the top relation to applicable ethical standards and treating customers fairly.
- Escalates regulatory or reputation issues to management as necessary.
- Provides llenge first (1LoD) line functions in connection with risks and controls.
- Develops and coaches the team as a high performance organization.
- Supports the SCO in the development and execution of the annual SLF U.S. compliance plan.
Position Requirements: - Experienced and seasoned professional with 10+ years of business experience and 5+ years of compliance and people management experience.
- Bacheloregree and post graduate or professional designations are preferred.
- Strong communication skills and success in working within a team-oriented setting is required.
- Collaborative and open leader that can motivate, develop and lead a team of professionals.
- Knowledge of life insurance company fundamentals and operations, specifically, employee group benefits (e.g., life, LTD, STD, and Accident) is required. Experience with dental, vision and/or stop loss business models also helpful.
- Familiarity with regulatory examinations, inquiries and investigations is important.
- Sound judgment and the ability to be pro-active, prioritize issues and recommend practical solutions.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- Clearly defines complex issues and operates well in ambiguous situations, helping others to navigate complexity and risk.
- Experience with navigating complex, matrixed organization with minimum disruption.
