Hiring Range: $2,231 - $3,941 per month.
(Anticipated hiring range: $2,231 - $3,100 per month)
This position is paid under the 10/12 pay plan, where the salary for 10 months is distributed over 12 months. The salary listed above is the salary that will be received every month. The incumbent will have July and August off (with pay, benefits, and vacation/sick leave accrual continuing through months off).

Position Description ***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED***
The Student Health Center Clinical Laboratory is a department within the Student Health Center essential in assisting health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of student patients by performing a series of laboratory tests.
Under the guidance of the Clinical Lab Scientists and general direction of the Medical Director, this position is responsible for serving as the laboratory phlebotomist and provides support to the overall laboratory operations and clinical staff. Duties include performing a variety of standard clinical assistance work, functioning as the primary laboratory receptionist, and completing basic and waived laboratory testing in accordance with CLIA regulations (Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments of 1988) for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems.
Under the guidance of the Clinical Lab Scientists and general direction of the Medical Director, the incumbent will:
- Assist in daily operations of the laboratory and Urgent Care clinic
- Make decisions related to general workflow.
- Make recommendations to the Clinical Lab Scientists or Medical Director and revise procedures/processes related to laboratory operations.
- Develop procedure manuals for the laboratory.
- Provide feedback, interpret and apply policy and procedures related to the laboratory.
- Maintain inventory tracking, reporting and record keeping.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of a high school program or its equivalent and one year of related experience in a health care setting. Post-secondary coursework in a related field or completion of an accredited program is preferred.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possess (or ability to obtain by date of hire) and maintain the following:
- Vaild and current certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.
- Valid and current basic life support cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
- General knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and equipment, including laboratory safety and quality assurance practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of current recognized standards and terminology to perform within the scope of practice.
- Knowledge of applicable professional ethics and standards.
- Knowledge in proper assessment and safe patient care with the ability to handle a syncopal patient.
- Working knowledge of CLIA-waived testing procedures and methods. Demonstrated ability to apply various techniques to collect required specimens with accuracy and detail.
- Demonstrable knowledge of Blood Borne Pathogens and Universal precautions.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to remain calm, decisive, and focused in an environment with numerous interruptions and requests. Ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
- Ability to accurately enter data into the electronic health record system or other computer applications.
- Ability to follow complicated instructions with accuracy and perform detailed tasks thoroughly and completely.
- Working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to clinical laboratory operations and patient confidentiality.
- Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to assign work assignments and train student assistants.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
- Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
- Knowledge of Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Experience in a college student Health Center.
- Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
- Experience in medical assisting.
Special Conditions (Staff)
***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED***
- Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
- Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
- The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
- This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
