Position Description ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF LANDSCAPE HORTICULTURE - The Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS) Department within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA seeks applications for a full-time academic year, tenure-track assistant or associate professor to teach courses related to sustainable landscapes and plant physiology. Topics may include landscape installation and maintenance, landscape plant materials, and general horticulture classes. Depending on areas of expertise, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to further develop curriculum related to sustainable landscapes, landscape design and management, and/or turfgrass management. Starting date is negotiable, but on or before September 13, 2018 is preferred.
Duties may include, but are not limited to: supervision of undergraduate senior projects, student career and coursework advising, and serving as advisor/mentor for student extracurricular activities with clubs, judging teams, and/or organizations. Student supervision may also include graduate student research, or teaching of a graduate-level course and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (e.g., applied research, grant writing, publications, and presentations). Service activities will include participation in department, college, and university committees and instructionally-related activities related to landscapes or related disciplines. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with technical staff and student employees to oversee and enhance departmental horticultural facilities.

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
A Ph.D. in horticulture or related field in plant sciences, demonstrated undergraduate teaching skills, and expertise in landscape plant physiology are required. Knowledge of, or experience with, landscape and turfgrass cultivation under semi-arid conditions, and water laws and regulations in arid and semi-arid climates, is desirable. Particular attention will be afforded to candidates who have demonstrable records of teaching and scholarly activity of high quality that would strengthen current department initiatives regarding the integration of sustainability in plant selection, establishment, growth and maintenance.
Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the general public is essential. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
Industry experience is preferred. The ability to collaborate on research with faculty across the College, University, and industry is desirable. Candidates who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links, are preferred.

The Horticulture and Crop Science Department's curriculum is designed so that students may enter the agricultural industry in production and related fields or a graduate program upon completion of the Agricultural and Environmental Plant Sciences (AEPS) bachelor's degree. The students in the department may choose one of three concentrations during their freshman year: Environmental Horticultural Science, Fruit and Crop Science, or Plant Protection Science. They may also pursue a Master of Science in Agriculture with a specialization in Crop Science, Environmental Horticultural Science or Plant Protection Science. Facilities include a 15-acre Environmental Horticulture Unit that consists of one and a half acres of greenhouses and outdoor nursery growing areas, a five-acre arboretum and extensive planted areas, a plant protection research/teaching laboratory, and excellent industry relations with landscape and nursery industry personnel and landscape horticulture firms throughout the state.
Cal Poly's College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), the largest non-land grant agricultural program in the United States, awards nearly half of all baccalaureate agriculture degrees granted in California.
