The Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of primary health care of patients including maintenance of clinical record/ documentation. Perform a wide variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for medical staff. The position requires the ability to make decisions consistent with clinic policies and the strict observance of confidentiality of patient information.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required Education: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program
Certification as a CMA/RMA through AAMA or AMT or able to attain certification within six (6) months of hire
Current CPR certification
Preferred Experience: Previous experience beneficial.

Job Specific:
· Reviews appointment schedules and ensures preference is given to patients in emergency situations. Maintains timely flow of patients.
· Greets patients and prepares them for their examination based on the provider's request including chief complaint (reason for visit), vital signs, allergies, and medication list.
· Preps Chart: Ensures all pertinent information is available at the time of each appointment.
· Instructs patients in specimen collection.
· Assists provider during examination of patient. Schedules patient testing. Instructs patient in preparation for procedures and testing, using instruction sheets/educational information when applicable and documents all tests scheduled in the patient record.
· Administers and documents ordered medications and injections. Follows guidelines with required forms, i.e., consent forms, immunizations.
· Performs prescribed procedures, including but not limited to, catheterization, throat cultures, suture removal, nebulizer treatments, ear irrigation, spirometry, and assists with sigmoidoscopy and colposcopy, cast application and other procedures as performed in a primary care or walk-in clinical setting as required per clinic.
· Applies orthopedic devices. Instructs in use of crutches as required per clinic.
· Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instruments following standardized procedures as required per clinic.
· Subcutaneous, intramuscular and intradermal injections as required per clinic.
· Performs venipuncture/EKG, if needed as required per clinic.
· Directs lab, x-ray, and ancillary testing results to providers for follow-up care.
· Notifies patients of results as directed by provider and documents all actions in the patient medical record.
· Makes decisions and uses judgment on telephone calls, answering questions, advising patients with provider guidance and documenting all action taken in the patient medical record.
· Makes 24-48 hour follow-up calls to check on patient progress.
· Maintains clean and orderly exam rooms according to established guidelines as well as neat and organized work areas.
· Maintains strict patient confidentiality and medical record confidentiality.
· Maintains files and follow-up system for abnormal tests and follow-up appointments.
· Ensures consents and referrals are channeled to the proper areas.
· Maintains updated orderly drug samples.
· Follows OSHA guidelines.
· Educates patients utilizing instructional material when available.
· Participates in committees and continuing education.
· Assists providers with CPT (procedural) and ICD-9 coding.
· Responsible to order and stock medical supplies.
· Assists with yearly inventory.
· Maintains knowledge of the use of the crash cart and ability to follow established Code policy as required per clinic.
· Obtains vital signs, chief complaint, allergies, and update medical list.
· Wears required uniform; adherence to dress code.
· Completes annual training, Blood-Borne Pathogens.
· Attends required meetings.
· Works at the highest level, utilizing a team-based approach, to ensure that patients have the full attention of a dedicated team of health care providers who work together to manage their care, while supporting diversity and cultural factors.
· Have a valid State of Wisconsin driver's license free of violations.

Telephone Triage
· Assists with triaging calls that come into department. Directs calls to providers, registered nurse and staff as needed.
· Ensures patients have telephone inquiries answered (responding in a timely manner).
IVA Testing (For Patients)
· Testing patients as requested per provider.
Prescriptions
· Processes prescription refill requests (prescription line).
· Phones and/or faxes prescriptions to appropriate pharmacy. Mails prescriptions to patients as needed.
· Processes prior authorizations (forms, etc.) for medications.
· Audits patient chart as needed to complete PA forms.
Appointments
· Assists appointment coordinators in scheduling patient appointments.
· Assists with reception/patient check-in as needed.
· Makes appointment for patients as needed.
· Schedules outpatient mental health counseling as needed.
· Assists schedulers with prior authorization/referrals.
· Assists with reminder calls and letters.
· Fills in for scheduling staff as needed.
Drug PEP/Samples
· Assists registered nurse with stocking sample area.
· Assists with sample requests for patients (subject to provider approval).
· Obtains samples. Contacts drug representative as needed to maintain supplies.
· Assists patient as needed for "needy med"/Drug Indigent Program requests.
