Job Summary: This is an exciting opportunity to advance, in collaboration with Covenant House New York (CHNY) and Covenant House International (CHI) leadership and experienced staff, CHNY's development and communications strategies. The Vice President of Development and Communications will supervise our institutional and government fundraising strategy (~$16M in revenue annually), and develop and implement a communications vision, to support and promote significant programmatic change and growth that is underway. This position will also take the lead in collaborating with CHI on major donor activities, a capital campaign and events.
The Vice President of Development & Communications is a high-impact role that will integrate sophisticated communications, storytelling, marketing, and strategic fundraising skills with human-centered leadership to enable organizational growth. This position will work closely with CHNY and CHI leadership and lead the efforts of a five-member development and communications team to build on existing assets, strengthen relationships with current funders and partners, and generate opportunities for growth within New York City.
Duties and responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Uses knowledge of CHNY's vision, mission, and competitive position in the sector to develop multi-year fundraising strategy for the organization
- Builds, cultivates, solicits and stewards a portfolio of foundation donors, cultivating strong and purposeful relationships that advance CHNY's mission
- Bolsters development systems and structures that will support effective, efficient, sustainable, and professional fundraising and communications programs.
- Takes a strong hands-on role in the development of foundation and government proposals, and other written materials, to ensure high-quality product and timely submission.
- Works and strategizes with CHNY and CHI leadership to meet and exceed annual fundraising goals.
- Writes and oversees the writing of letters of inquiry, grant proposals, reports and other related communications.
- Ensures that grants and reporting deadlines are efficiently and effectively tracked to ensure timely submissions.
- Leads and facilitates site visits by potential funders.
- Maintains and enhances relationships, both internal and external, that support CHNY's services for homeless and trafficked youth.
- Researches and identifies new sources of general operating and program-specific support.
- Takes the lead on collaborating with CHI on major donor activities, a capital campaign that is underway, and special events including the Covenant House Sleep Outs that take place onsite at CHNY.
- Communications
- Develops and oversees implementation of a communications strategy that focuses on development, staff needs, and ensuring CHNY's services are known to the public and youth in need of our services
- Partners with CHNY and CHI leadership and staff to develop compelling communication content and materials that complements the organization's development needs.
- Partners with CHNY and CHI leadership to revamp the CHNY website and maintain fresh, visually interesting content
- Oversees a wide variety of internal and external communications projects including but not limited to, a monthly newsletter, all-staff communications, blog posts, CHNY brochures, signage within sites, an internal shared drive and Intranet system, and social media accounts.
- Supports and promotes consistency of messaging across the organization, which requires close collaboration across teams.
- Collaborates with executive staff to prepare communication materials for the Board of Directors including but not limited to presentations to be made at Board meetings and fundraising materials to be used by Board members.
- Leadership/Management
- Manages the professional development of five fundraising and communications professionals
- Plays a key organizational leadership role to promote a healthy, inclusive and equitable organizational culture that enables exceptional results and a thriving, engaged staff; and engages and advises on key organizational strategic questions
- Always reflects CHNY's values and principles on social media.
- Always upholds CHNY's mission, vision and principles, standards of conduct, policies and procedures.
Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.
- At least five (5) years' experience working with various funding sources, including foundation and government funders.
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience in grant writing.
- Knowledge of the foundation funding community as well as government funding.
- Demonstrated skill in grant writing.
- Excellent and persuasive communicator with a strategic understanding of how to tell effective stories about CHNY's work to build support and passion for the organization
- High comfort level with social media.
- Innovative thinker with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output and an ability to set priorities decisively, delegate responsibilities, assure accountability and allocate resources to ensure results.
- Mastery of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel in particular) and Power Point.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Personable, focused and be able to translate passion into compelling cases for support.
- Team player and be able to work with all levels of management.
- Flexible schedule for occasional weekend or evening events or deadlines.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet a demanding schedule of deadlines.
- Supervisory experience required.
