The Role of the Associate Vice President
Cornell University seeks a visionary, strategic, and dynamic leader to serve as its next senior leader for alumni affairs. Reporting to the Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development, the Associate Vice President for Alumni Affairs serves on Cornell's Alumni Affairs and Development senior leadership team and is responsible for directing and executing Cornell's overall Alumni Affairs program, which engages a global constituency of 235,000 alumni with Cornell students, faculty and staff.
This position leads a team of 50 employees (in the University and College offices across multiple locations) and oversees an operating budget of $7.5 million. The AVP will work collaboratively with deans, volunteers, and staff to develop and implement the next phase vision and plan for alumni affairs at Cornell and drive positive change in a multi-faceted university and volunteer environment. In particular, this person will be responsible for leading a process to develop a strategic plan at the outset of his or her tenure. That plan will define the first five years of their leadership at Cornell.

[email protected] The ideal candidate for the position of associate vice president for alumni affairs at Cornell University will be a Cornell graduate with considerable leadership and management experience in an institution of similar or greater complexity. As the members of the Cornell alumni community and their interest in and need for engagement evolve, and as the tools for engagement rapidly change, the university seeks a vibrant leader who will accommodate for those changes and help set a new and Cornell-centric road map for the alumni affairs program.
The successful candidate will express a vision for the future of engagement with external constituencies that is consistent with Cornellalues and the passion and pride of its alumni. Superior strategic skills are required, including the ability to match resource allocation with optimal return on investment.
Particularly desirable are the following attributes.
- Affinity for Cornell, its history and unique culture
- A track record of success in effectively leading people, teams, and organizations; a minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible experience as a manager and leader is required
- Demonstrated ability to inspire and lead with creativity and resourcefulnessluding cutting edge engagement techniques (e.g. marketing, loyalty programs, and volunteerism) and the application of technology
- Significant experience as a non-profit professional or volunteer leader.
- High energy and interest in interacting with a wide variety of people and structures doing so with a strong personal presence and as a frequent traveler and weekend campus host
- Desire to partner effectively with fundraising colleagues
- The ability to maneuver and influence people and change in a complicated matrix structure
- Experience in enterprises recognized for their strength and effectiveness, including education, non-profit management or a field or industry that emphasizes relationship building, stewardship, and overseeing event-driven programming and communications
- Experience inspiring change in productive and compelling ways
- The ability to engage a complex, diverse audience of internal and external stakeholders in a bold and strategic vision, and to build and institutionalize a program capable of fulfilling that vision
- An entrepreneurial approach to building and guiding a program and the ability to reach out to a broader community to promote the mission of an institution
- The ability to function effectively in a large, decentralized environment and to build solid relationships with numerous constituencies, both internal and external to Cornell

- A supportive and accessible management style, the ability to lead and motivate a diverse staff and to encourage change and growth in both people and programs, and a strong commitment to personal and professional development
- Experience working with volunteers, the ability to manage complex relationships, and proven collaboration and teamwork skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and leverage activities, initiatives, and programs for multiple purposes, particularly in the international arena
- Demonstrate the cultural sensitivity to effectively represent Cornell to our diverse community of alumni, students, faculty, and staff
- Willingness to travel extensively on behalf of Cornell University, to maintain a high level of visibility with our alumni-population, and to participate regularly in alumni events and activities
- Experience working in a matrix organization, with successful demonstration of the ability to manage competing priorities
