Essential Functions (Job Duties)
JOB PURPOSE Wayne State University is seeking a talented HR leader to serve as the Associate Vice President of Human Resources (AVP HR). The AVP HR leads human capital initiatives and strategies that will support high levels of employee engagement, promote customer service excellence, and attract and retain high performing employees. The AVP HR oversees all aspects of human resources including labor and employee relations, compensation, benefits & wellness, talent acquisition, HR data and technology, payroll, and performance management. The AVP HR will work collaboratively with the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Personnel who is responsible for faculty and academic staff affairs and academic labor relations. The AVP HR reports to the Vice President of Finance and Business Operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Develop the team, structure and processes to manage the departments and programs within the division of human resources;
Analyze and interpret related legislation, and establish methods for incorporating legislation into the functioning of the university;
Ensure alignment between human resources practices and the University's mission, vision and values;
Oversee negotiating and interpreting non-academic collective bargaining agreements;
Review and assess existing, and proposed programs and systems and implement changes which improve efficiency and effectiveness of human resources processes;
Lead human resources and the entire university community in developing policies, practices, and protocols that help foster a diverse and inclusive employee population and advance the principles of equity, inclusion and accessibility;
Serve as a strategic advisor on a variety of HR matters;
Motivate, develop and create a strong and professional HR team that delivers excellent customer service and brings discipline and consistency to HR processes throughout the university;
Develop new systems to provide timely and efficient reporting of employee information
Unique Duties
Qualifications EDUCATION MBA or a Master's Degree in HR or closely related field.
EXPERIENCE A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible human resource experience with at least 5 years of recent experience as a top human resources executive leading a broad range of human resources functions in a union environment. Experience working successfully in a complex, decentralized environment. University experience is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to initiate and lead continuous improvement efforts through innovative HR solutions and technology, and to create, implement, administer and evaluate best practices in human resources programs and services. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively, persuasively and credibly with all levels of employees. Effective management and leadership skills. Demonstrated strong interpersonal abilities.
