Job Description Assistant Controller, Senior Vice President

The Assistant Controller is responsible for supporting the Chief Accounting Officer with the Accounting function. This includes assisting with accounting policy research, implementation of new accounting guidance, month-end close and reporting process, general ledger controls and processing, accounting for stock compensation, preparing draft disclosures for new accounting standards and a comprehensive set of controls and procedures.
Reporting Information/Location
The Assistant Controller position is located at the Comerica Bank Tower at 1717 Main Street, Dallas, TX. and reports to the SVP, Chief Accounting Officer. This position has 5 direct reports.
Position Responsibilities: Support of the Accounting Function
- Oversee the design and implementation of appropriate processes for implementation of newly issued and complex accounting standards such as revenue recognition, changes in methodology for life of loan loss reserves, new standards for classifying and measuring financial instruments.
- Oversee appropriate implementation of proper accounting policies and procedures for new business initiatives and significant transactions such as agreements to process merchant processing or credit referral agreements.
- Assist in implementing better controls and processes to monitor and analyze IT and capital expenditures.
- Assist in GL closing and reporting process for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end.
- Reviews journal entries produced by staff for complex and unusual transactions.
- Performs complex accounting calculations including executive cash and stock incentive compensation calculations.
- Identifies, designs, and implements process improvements to improve efficiencies and reduce risk.
- Reviews all investor presentations and financial reports filed with the SEC.
- Ensures controls over financial reporting are operating effectively.
- Helps prepare Board level presentations.
- Fulfills Internal Audit, SOX, external audit and other examiner requests; implements remediation plans for audit and exam findings.
Special projects as requested (Including analysis for CEO, CFO and others)
- Examples of Special Projects include...Performance analysis on ROE, ROA, Pension Plan analysis, Analysis of unusual transactions (both impact to current results and future considerations), etc.
- Continuously interacts with other departments, including External Reporting, Treasury, FP&A, and IT, SAG and HR to provide and obtain necessary information.
Lead Team
- Manage staff, including hiring, performance reviews, and addressing performance issues.
- Indirectly lead and manage teams of employees within Accounting and Finance.
- Guides and reviews staff projects to ensure accuracy and achievement of departmental deadlines.
Travel
- Roughly 10% travel is required
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- Certified Public Account (CPA) required
- 10 years of progressive responsibility and direct experience with a banking institution or public accounting firm
- 4 years management experience
Preferred Qualifications - Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi- task.
- Comfort in communicating to all internal and external partners (regulators, auditors, management, investors, etc).
- Strong analytical skills and ability to obtain results through the development of new concepts and imaginative approaches.
- Attention to detail and can explain the most complex subjects in an effective, understandable and compelling manner.
- Ability to handle difficult-situations.
- Ability to be flexible, decisive and quick-thinking.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting concepts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products; knowledge of Query tools and Hyperion preferred.
- Ability to select, motivate, retain, coach and develop a high performing team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
