The role of the Director, Grants Administration is to direct and manage the processes and funding associated with obtaining NIH funding for research initiatives and ensuring compliant usage of such awards. The incumbent will apply knowledge of the award process to assist investigators in obtaining grants for projects aligned with the organization`s strategy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Directs pre-award and post-award operational activities and provides guidance for the development of Grants Administration staff.
2. Directs the work of Grants Administration staff, including coaching, hiring, terminating and other human resources related activities.
3. Develops, reviews, and updates policies and procedures to support the pre-award and post award processes.
4. Participates in sourcing activities to identify biomedical research funding opportunities, which support organizational strategies.
5. Provides direction to research investigators and staff in proposal development, submission, and award negotiation.
6. Maintains appropriate communication with IRB Manager to stay abreast of protocols in the IRB review process.
7. Direct grants awarded in excess of $3 million. Provides regular status reports to appropriate members of leadership and investigators on funding appropriations and usage.
8. Establishes standards for the maintenanceof research acquisition records and provides guidance to staff in support of these standards.
9. Directs the review of the grants administration function during OER, A-133 (independent external audits) and other compliance audits.
10. Reviews and recommends adjustments for compliance training for employees of The Methodist Research Institute.
11. Adheres to the I CARE Values and Service Pride Standards in daily activities.
12. Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.
13. Handles related projects as needed.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelor`s degree in Health Care Administration, Accounting, Biological Science or related field required; graduate degree preferred. Equivalent experience in a Grants Administration Officer role may be substituted in lieu of graduate degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Minimum 5 years experience in a medical research or academic setting required, with an emphasis on grants and contract administration. 2 plus years in a management capacity required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) preferred.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Demonstrated familiarity with pertinent federal and non-profit sponsor regulations and policies, including OMB Circulars, NIH and PHS Grants Policies.
2. Familiarity with industry-sponsored clinical trials budgets and contracts.
3. Ability to provide direction and support to multiple levels of staff.
4. Ability to represent the Grants Administration office to investigators, senior institutional officials, institutional administrative and financial components, and sponsors.
5. Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations.
6. Excellent time management skills. Ability to work with multiple time-critical priorities.
7. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
