The Director of Editorial and Instructional Design is responsible for all daily functions of the Editorial Department at Learning A-Z, including budgetary responsibilities, staff hiring, development planning, and collaborating with other department leaders at Learning A-Z. The candidate must work collaboratively with Production & Design, Art & Photo, Project Management, Multimedia, Research & Evaluation, Product Management, Engineering and Marketing to ensure the content creation is of the highest quality and is developed with input from all relevant stakeholders. The Director of Editorial and Instructional Design will lead a team of experienced editors in the development of new content with the goal of identifying and meeting needs, often with creative solutions, for an ever-changing educational technology market. The Director of Editorial and Instructional Design is an integral part of our management team at Learning A-Z, reporting directly to the Vice President of Publishing. Essential Job Functions:
- Oversee the editorial content creation for all Learning A-Z resources, including editing, proofing and reviews
- Recruit, hire, retain and develop a professional staff of editors
- Work with the Finance Department to create and manage an annual budget for the department, including all internal costs and external contract expenses
- Collaborates with other company managers to identify which new resources or enhancements to develop to most benefit users and the company, and helps prioritize new resource development
- Work collaboratively with Product Managers, Production & Design, Photo & Art, Engineering, Research & Evaluation team leaders, and Project Managers in the development of all new resources as well as the maintenance of existing resources
- Collaborate with management team to develop business growth strategies and resource development
- Actively partners with management and leaders in other departments to ensure that departmental priorities are aligned with the rest of the company
- Determine and review milestones for completion of new resources; schedule and prioritize workloads to meet all deadlines
Additional Job Functions:
- Maintain awareness of the competitive landscape and apply market intelligence to the development of products
- Stay abreast of curriculum trends and development as well as the role technology plays in the development and delivery of curriculum
- Lead with integrity and support your team's continuing education in the industry, market and skills for their jobs
- Provide preliminary schedules and cost estimates for editorial development projects
- Coach your direct reports in 1-on-1 meetings regularly and review quarterly goals and write annual reviews for your reports
- Represent the department at company-wide meetings, conferences, and presentations to customers or prospects if needed
- Edit, proofread and evaluate editorial content for publication
Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's/Master's degree in Education, English, Journalism or related field
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in publishing/editing
- Minimum of 3 years' experience management
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to supervise a large number of people
- Ability to manage time effectively
- Ability to motivate, develop and direct people
- Expert command of the English language
Preferred Qualifications: - Strong project management skills
- Ability to set clear parameters for effective and efficient resource development and to balance development considerations with company needs
- Highly proficient in MS Office and Acrobat Pro applications
- Experience with instructional design and data and assessment
- Classroom teaching experience
