About the Position: Reporting to the VP of BD, the Director of BD executes business development strategies and programs such as Technology Days and Portfolio Days and other structured networking activities for our CVC portfolio companies. These programs should introduce the portfolio to global customers and strategic partners to increase their revenue and maximize investment returns. The candidate should also support the business development function and expansion of our incubator companies so that they mature into strong and viable businesses that can either be spun into National Grid as operating businesses or talent/IP acquisitions or spun out of the portfolio for a financial return. The candidate should also support the business development function of various internal innovation projects and to help with the formation of the appropriate business models and monetization strategies for each project.
The BD team is a global team but currently located only in the US, that focuses on generating commercial opportunities through venture investing, addressing end customer needs, and providing insight into innovative technologies by enabling partnerships between the business groups within National Grid and the global technology ecosystem. The position is located in Los Gatos, CA and has considerable coverage across all of the regions. The successful candidate will be a trusted partner to National Gridusinesses, and their expertise, insights and thought leadership will be welcome and sought after.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Business development and go-to-market experience and demonstrated ability to deliver business growth for start-up and late stage technology companies; and a track-record of working with start-up companies in the business development function.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders and to establish strategic relationships with Global 2000 businesses and manage executive level relationships.
- Experience with channel sales, channel account management, marketing, competitive analysis, business development and sales.
- Sales management experience including: meeting and exceeding quotas, expanding and on-boarding partners and distributors. Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
- Deliver innovative business development programs to drive commercial success for portfolio companies and innovation projects.
- Lead new initiatives and execution of programs for creating business building opportunities for the portfolio companies spanning multiple technology disciplines.
Qualifications Knowledge & Experience Required:
- Undergraduate degree in Business, Science or Engineering preferred.
- Understanding of the energy, consumer, and IT sectors including future trends, competitors, incumbents, and business models.
- Technology literate, with experience of understanding the business and strategic implications of technology change.
- Full understanding of the venture capital / private equity / incubation investment sectors as it relates to emerging technologies and business models. Knowledge of internal and external crowd sourced innovation idea formation and development.
- Marketing and business development - Identifying new, relevant companies that we can partner with by investing and helping them to scale their businesses and to achieve a profitable exit.
- Full understanding of the strategic partnering landscape and development of successful strategic partnerships.
- Comfortable working in a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders and in an environment where results need to be achieved through influence rather than line management authority. Ability to build strong relationships across all levels within an organization.
