Grinnell College seeks a talented, experienced and versatile educator to serve as the Director of Academic Support for Writing and Speaking in a full-time, 10-month continuing position. The director will advance the Writing Lab's mission to support writing and speaking instruction in broad terms: through direct work with individual students, for-credit courses, formal and informal faculty development, and active collaboration with other on-campus entities involved in instruction, assessment, and advising. The director maintains the smooth running of the Writing Lab as a department, supervises all Writing Lab staff, and supports other faculty in their teaching of writing and speaking. The director also seeks out opportunities to better support all constituencies (such as English language learners) and new media for communication (such as academic poster presentations).
Minimum Qualifications Because the Director will hold Lecturer status, the College requires a PhD or master's degree in an academic field, five years of experience in teaching of writing, and demonstrated ability to supervise others in an academic setting. A record of effective work with a diverse student body is essential. Experience with residential liberal arts colleges and writing center administration is desirable. In letters of application, candidates should address their vision for a collaborative approach to student writing success, utilizing writing professionals, peer mentors, and classroom faculty, and describe their experiences that prepare them to lead the Writing Lab in the directions described above.
