This critical position will be primarily responsible for the effective and efficient management of a growing legal department's resources, systems, and initiatives. The successful candidate is currently working in a mature legal operations function and is ready to take on the challenge of leading legal operations into a new era of success and performance. This legal operations professional will serve as a trusted advisor to the General Counsel in a highly visible role, engaging with a wide array of internal and external constituents as a representative of the Legal Department.
Your day to day role will include:
- Business process improvement, both internally for the Legal Department staff and in in collaboration with operations and other shared services functions.
- Execution of Legal Department initiatives to be a high-value, scalable support function to a growing and complex business.
- Develop, manage, and drive performance against the department's budget and forecast, including direct engagement with outside firms, management of internal resources including the Legal Tracker system, and close collaboration with the Finance team.
- Implement processes and procedures for improvements in Legal Department management.
- Manage a central legal request intake process and allocate resources to legal matters.
- Ensure the proper processing and retention of critical documents, including assistance with a document management system implementation.
- Assist in or coordinate special projects as assigned
- Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, initiative, and ability to work independently in supporting the Legal Department on a variety of issues.
- Act with courtesy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity in all dealings with all constituents.
- Develop and maintain effective, high-performing working relationships both inside and outside the company.
You Have:
- Prior successful business management experience, preferably in an in-house legal department.
- Demonstrated success in planning and execution, including detailed plans and timetables, prioritization, resource allocation, and follow-through.
- Experience managing external spend with analytics, bench marking, and alternative fee arrangements.
- Demonstrated understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and billing software.
- Entrepreneurial approach to developing and considering new ideas and success models for delivering legal services to support commercial goals.
- Current success deploying and managing legal department process and systems, including contract management, records management, and e-billing tools, to drive efficiency, collaboration, scalable support for the business.
- Clear and strategic thinker; proven experience in translating strategies into actionable plans.
- Capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously and executing to completion.

Basic Qualifications: - Education: Bachelors degree required
- Minimum 10 years of work experience with recent, multi-year focus on legal department operations.
- Must have in-house experience with a national or global business, demonstrating success and accomplishments in legal department operations.
- An action-oriented self-starter and initiative-taker.
- English proficiency required; additional languages may be considered favorably.
- Technology-savvy; adaptable when learning new systems; proficient in Microsoft Office products.
- Limited travel expectations (approximately 10%).
- Local residents in the greater Chicago area preferred (no relocation).
