Our team is the WAN Engineering team within Azure Networking. This team provides the network support for Microsoft's online services. We have a well- deserved reputation for providing industry leading operations engineering across multiple data centers on a best of class, global backbone. The successful candidate will directly influence our top priority of highly reliable Online Services. Roles & Responsibilities: IP Wide Area Network Design is the core of our team's responsibility. We gather requirements, design solutions, prototype them in a lab environment, pilot it in production, document and operationalize the chosen solution. As a senior network engineer, you are given great independence to manage your projects and engage with the necessary teams to drive your project to success. We work closely with teams in charge of the Optical network, infrastructure deployment, and capacity planning to name a few. This collaborative and adaptive environment is essential for us to scale at cloud speed.
Since our mission is to build the world's most reliable cloud, network operations is also part of our role. Members of the team take part in an on-call rotation and are expected to be the last level of escalation for any IP related issues on the WAN. This provides an excellent feedback loop to improve on our designs by giving us a design perspective focused on reliability, stability and simplicity.
Core responsibilities of this job will include:
- Gathering requirements for a project
- Prototyping different solutions in a lab environment
- Documenting the chosen design and communicating it to appropriate stakeholders
- Piloting new solutions on the production network
- Developing automation required for mass deployments
- Operationalizing the solution
- Creating/Updating documentation and/or SOPs
- Creating/Updating troubleshooting guides
- Training for other members of the on-call rotation
- Ensuring our monitoring systems are updated as necessary
- Configuration management automation
- Actively participate in on-call rotation which will include
- Immediate mitigation of network impact and restoration of service.
- Investigation and deep dive analysis of root cause for outages.
- Replacement of failed router parts
- Collaborating and supporting other teams to enable our mutual success
Skills & Qualifications: The successful candidate must be able to understand project requirements, and probe to get as many details as possible to then design an appropriate solution. The person in this role must have a strong working knowledge of layer 2 protocols, layer 3 networking with IP, as well as routing protocols such as OSPF/IS-IS, BGP, and MPLS. Experience with traditional MPLS RSVP-TE solutions is imperative, but knowledge about more modern solutions using Segment Routing is also a must. A systematic approach to troubleshooting is imperative for efficiently troubleshooting network issues impacting customers. These skills must be applied across a variety of networking platforms including but not limited to Cisco, Juniper, and Arista. A good candidate also has strong scripting skills to automate day to day tasks. Perl, Python and Powershell are preferred programming languages but not a strict requirement. A candidate must possess a solid understanding of software architecture with the ability to articulate software requirements to teams of Software Developers.
In addition to technical skills, the successful candidate must be highly effective in written and oral communications with a set of partners located around the globe. Azure Networking provides connectivity to a very large number of online services requiring the successful candidate to be a strong collaborator, attentive listener, calm under pressure, earn confidence from others and be adaptive, since the candidate's role may span a variety of traditional roles, such as design engineer, deployment engineer, operations engineer and project manager.

Basic Qualifications: - At least 3 years of network engineering experience in an online services or internet service provider environment.
Preferred Qualifications: - CCIE/JNCIE is highly desired
- Experience programming/scripting with C#, Perl, Python, PowerShell, TCL, Bash
- Knowledge of optical technologies for WAN connectivity
- Significant experience with a programming language
- Experience with routing protocols such as: ISIS, OSPF, BGP
- Experience with traffic engineer solutions such as: RSVP-TE, Segment Routing
