Position Profile
The primary responsibilities for this position will include design and construction engineering of airport facilities. Day to day tasks include development of construction plans and specifications, project schedules and budgets. Project types will include new construction and rehabilitation of airfield features; site and land development, including roadway and auto parking facilities, site grading and drainage, piped utilities, storm detention facilities, and aircraft and equipment storage structures; and airfield lighting and navigational aid siting. This position will occasionally support aviation planning projects such as Airport Layout Plans, Master Plans, and obstruction mitigation projects.
The ideal candidate will be a pragmatic problem solver who excels while working on a variety of project types concurrently, equipped with exceptional organizational and communication skills.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
1. Engineer/designer will be responsible for design engineering duties including preparation of engineer reports, performing pavement analysis, developing geometric layout and grading, preparation of calculations, authoring technical specifications, deriving schedules and opinions of probable construction cost, and compiling construction plans, including the development of details and construction safety and phasing elements
2. Position will require the ability to evaluate record documents, conduct site investigations, assess challenges, identify solutions, and make recommendations regarding project formulation and scope
3. Occasional construction engineering duties may include observing construction, interpreting design intent in the field, evaluating installed construction for compliance with contract documents, material testing, and the documentation of project progress in accordance with Illinois Department of Transportation requirements
4. Other duties as assigned
Qualifications Technical Skills: - Top candidates will possess civil site design experience utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D or Microstation/GEOPAK and the ability to develop construction documents with minimal guidance
- Candidates with Microstation/GEOPAK must have the ability and desire to rapidly and effectively transition to AutoCAD Civil 3D
Soft Skills:
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and/or public stakeholders, including attending and/or facilitating project and programming related meetings
- Ability to build effective relationships with industry peers, coworkers, and external client bases, including the ability to collaborate across multiple geographic locations
- Ability and desire to work independently and as a team member to problem solve and learn new technical skills
- Interest in experiencing a variety of assignments concurrently and effectively multitask to complete project tasks under accelerated conditions, when needed
Education/Experience: - Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with appropriate course work in the civil site development, pavement design, and/or transportation discipline required
- EIT (EI) required
- PE registration preferred
- Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of four (4) years of experience. New graduate candidates will be considered, but must exhibit the soft skills identified and possess an exemplary, well-documented work history
- Experience observing construction preferred, but not required
- Experience interacting with, and application of technical requirements related to, a State Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration is preferred but not required
