The Capacity team is responsible for designing, building and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and all the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). We focus on smart growth with an emphasis on automation, data driven engineering, cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability. We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform.
Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 100 datacenters and 1 million servers. Our portfolio is built and managed by a team of subject matter experts working 24x7x365 to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide. Within MCIO, Forecasting and Capacity Supply Chain (FACS) is responsible for customer demand forecasting, capacity planning and management, supply chain planning and execution, capacity provisioning, and decommissioning of datacenters worldwide. FACS partners with several teams across MCIO and Microsoft to ensure critical capacity is deployed on-time to meet business priorities of the engineering teams.
We are looking for a Senior Service Engineer/Network Planner to join the Capacity Planning & Management team in the Regional Connectivity Planning (RCP). This position will be responsible for creating the High-Level Design in compliance with high-level architectural and Engineering standard guidelines. In addition, the Network Planner will contribute to defining regional connectivity plan. This role will primarily engage with Azure Engineering, DC Supply Strategy Planning, Site Selection, Fiber Acquisition and the Finance teams as appropriate to ensure the High-Level Design is captured, refined and accurately reflected in MCIO systems and that financial liability for long-range planning are known and approved.
Key Responsibilities: Work with various teams to understand the network, performance constraints and growth requirements
Perform analysis across a large number of data sources to create a network strategy for size and location of Datacenters and Gateways
Create High Level Design document illustrating the backbone and edge networks
Create initial CapEx estimate and work with Finance team on budget planning
Interface with Supply Strategy and other teams to devise forecast on hardware and network acquisition around the globe
Work with Engineering team to update the HLD and request final approval
Create Bill of Material and work with Procurement and Finance teams for PO approval
Leverage tools like PowerShell, Python & SQL to collect and retrieve network and H/W analytics
Perform scenario analysis to understand impact of Data Center size, optical solution, site location etc.
Basic Qualifications: Bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering or related technical field
2+ of experience with design and/or deployment of datacenter in Enterprise or Carrier organization
4+ years of experience in network infrastructure and datacenter design
Preferred Qualifications: 2+ years in network and capacity planning
Experience with core networking protocols BGP, MPLS, RSVP
Knowledge of optical transport network, including DWDM, CWDM, and various optical transceivers
Experience with SQL and scripting language
Experience in Supply Chain and/or Project Management
Industry certifications in networking and/or project management
Able to communicate with multiple internal teams to collect relevant data and produce comprehensive analyses
Demonstrate ability to work with others and be flexible as priorities change and be extremely sensitive to deadlines
Can-do attitude in a very fast paced environment
