Principal Staff Engineer:
This position seeks out an energetic, motivated and technically competent graduate electrical engineer to develop and direct the long-term, strategic and asset management focus of transmission and distribution substation equipment.
Responsibilities include the development of specifications, technical and maintenance standards and practices for 500KV through 4KV: Transformers, Reactors, Surge arrestors, GIS, Circuit Breakers, circuit switchers, disconnect switches, CCVT's, stand alone CT's, PT's, metering units, etc. Provide field support (24 x 7) to operating divisions with operational and maintenance issues associated with the previously listed equipment. Prepare equipment bid requests, evaluate proposals and purchase recommendations. Local and international travel in support of equipment design reviews, factory audits, equipment inspections, witness factory acceptance testing, review and approve test results. This position supports the engineering and design activities for construction / operation / maintenance of the substation transmission system. Utilize system expertise and working knowledge of standards and regulations to ensure environmental and regulatory compliance in addition to providing energy solutions for new / large customers.
Provides analysis and solutions of engineering, specific equipment and complex system performance issues through mature judgment, creativity, and originality by utilizing and adapting a broad knowledge of basic engineering principles and practices acquired through progressive experience, such as switching transient issues, resonance, equipment failures, and equipment mis-operations.
The maintenance of PSE&G's transmission and distribution substation assets requires critical and highly specialized skills to analyze specific equipment and system performance; identify trends and gaps; generate solution options (maintenance / replacement plan); determine system impacts; effect on business targets; and evaluate economic and operational risks. Work with and support Substation Equipment Expert and other group members as required to: research, investigate, develop and apply innovative technologies and products to foster cost efficiency in the growth and operation of the transmission and distribution system.
Develop and evaluate subordinates including: providing feedback, reviewing performance, preparing appraisals and assisting subordinates in planning developmental and corrective programs.
This position represents PSE&G in technical forums as an active contributing member of professional and technical standards committees (IEEE Switchgear Committee, PJM Transmission Substation Design Standards Committee). Maintain and apply working knowledge of PSEG Standards for Business Controls and meet managementxpectations for effective internal business controls.
Required Competencies: - BS degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes (ANSI, IEEE, ASTM, NEC, NESC, etc).
- Minimum 7 years of electrical utility or plant experience and knowledge of electrical substations and switching stations equipment such as transformers, GIS, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, regulators, capacitor banks, disconnect switches and associated electrical system for switching and substations.
- Applicant must have effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, strong planning and organizing skills, must be adaptable and be results-oriented.
- Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills are essential.
- Ability to cover On Call Assignments to handle emergency replacement work and assist during system emergency situations
- Must have a valid drivericense

Because the job requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, must possess a valid drivericense with a safe and satisfactory driver history.
Desired Qualifications: - Advanced technical training or NJ Professional Engineering License
- Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and/or PhD.
- Experience in working on electrical layout, one line control, controls schematics for protective relays, alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA and metering circuits in order to effectively support projects.
- Experience maintaining Substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, switchgear, etc. is desirable.
