In this role, the Battery R&D/Product Development Engineer will provide leadership and technical direction on battery designs to support cost and performance objectives. This individual will translate fundamental knowledge into viable battery designs that can be successfully implemented in our production environments. This is accomplished through cross-functional engagement with R&D, procurement, quality and manufacturing colleagues.
Specific Accountabilities
- Design and conduct robust experiments to develop knowledge leading to new or improved energy systems or processes which have marketable cost and/or performance advantages.
- Understand and apply fundamental properties of battery inputs to develop performance-based product and process specifications.
- Coordinate battery design development efforts from benchtop/pilot trials to production scale up and implementation.
- Provide regular written documentation and oral presentations to assess and record progress of the work.
- Provide engineering estimates and input to business case analyses as requested.
- Participate in establishing intellectual property related to assigned programs through experimental work and collaborative discussions.
- Practice proper safety procedures and reports unsafe acts or conditions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience - Bacheloregree in Engineering from an accredited institution
- Co-op or internship experience in Chemical Engineering OR experience in a technical laboratory, industrial manufacturing or similar environment
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with design of experiments and statistical data analysis software
- Process development experience; ability to scale designs and processes from benchtop to production
- Electrochemistry experience is preferred

Working Relationships - Interfaces with supervisors for direction and guidance, and collaborates with colleagues as well as external networks and partners to achieve assigned objectives
- Interfaces with other technology, engineering and service groups to acquire information and services necessary to meet assigned objectives
- Supervises and develops 0-3 non-exempt colleagues, and provides annual appraisals of their performance and developmental feedback
Work Environment - Will work in a technical lab setting with occasional travel to manufacturing plants/locations or suppliers
- Travel up to 25% both domestically and internationally as required
- Potential exposure to health risks or conditions that may require the use of personal protective equipment
- A work schedule that may occasionally vary from typical business hours
