PRIMARY SUMMARY:

Under general direction, the primary function of the Metallurgical Engineer is to provide support in all aspects of thermal processing, cleaning, plating and subsequent coating of fasteners for City of Industry. Conduct and participate in audits to ensure compliance with AS9100, NADCAP, NDT, and/or other established standards. Responsible for establishing raw material requirements that will provide the most economical manufacturing processes while assuring the finished product meets all end user requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducts microscopic studies of metals and alloys to determine their physical characteristics such as crystal structure, dispersion of alloy particles through basic metal, presence of impurities, fractures, and other defects in metal samples.

• Develops hot working, cold working, heat-treating and aging processes to obtain desired characteristics such as ductility, malleability, elongation, durability and hardness.

• Develops and directs tests for alloys in tension, compression, impact, bending or fatigue devices to study physical characteristics for manufacturing purposes or determine compliance with Engineering specifications and standards.

• Maintains current process specifications relating to heat treat, aging, surface preparation, plating and coating operations. Develops new process specifications as new requirements emerge. Assists manufacturing departments in preparing work instructions to ensure final requirements are met.

• Coordinates customer process control and part specification requirements to ensure product performances are met.

• Conducts audits as necessary to ensure processes and procedures are being performed to AS9100, NADCAP, NDT, and/or other established standards.

• Develops training material within the metallurgical and mechanical Testing, heat treat and plating areas and conducts training sessions with the laboratory, heat treat and plating personnel.

• Demonstrates satisfactory commitment to all LEAP (LISI Excellence Achievement Program) requirements as they relate to this position.

• Participates in technical committees associated with professional associations such as the ASM International, Aircraft Locknut Manufacturers Association, Industrial Fastener Institute, PRI (NADCAP), and the National Aerospace Standard Committee.

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university in related field with minimum of 3 years recent related work experience rand/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
• Manufacturing experience in inspection, production, and troubleshooting techniques. Experience with NDT equipment and measuring instruments.
• Experience in chemical testing, chemical requirements and grades of various kinds of metals such as; titanium, stainless steel, aluminum.
• Experience leading or participating in internal audits.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Contact Management systems; Database systems; Internet software; and Spreadsheet and Word Processing software.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze and interpret industry technical documents. Ability to respond to inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information, respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, and sampling theory.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
