New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint an Associate Director for Student Leadership reporting to the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Life.
The Associate Director for Student Leadership will work closely with colleagues in Campus Life to develop a well-coordinated set of initiatives that advance NYUAD’s broader educational mission, including matters related to student leadership, engagement and student activities. This position works closely with Campus Life colleagues to develop a framework for student leadership beginning with first-year orientation, and then oversees the implementation of innovative programming that supports this model.
Key Responsibilities - Develop and implement a leadership development model for NYUAD students across disciplines. Conduct research to understand the opportunities and needs for leadership programming aimed at undergraduates and, potentially, graduate students at NYUAD. Work with the leadership of Campus Life and across NYUAD to capitalize on existing programming and, when necessary, design and deliver new programming. Work with counterparts at other NYU global campuses on collaborative leadership initiatives and planning
- Oversee the advisement and operational support of Student Interest Groups (SIGs), student conferences, and Student Government. Support includes: developing and maintaining SIG policies, guidelines and trainings on such topics as leadership, budget preparation, event planning, risk management, and marketing. Assist in the planning, oversight and implementation of signature and recurring events. Advise Student Government in the areas of leadership, budgeting, policies, procedures, best practices, communication, and day-to-day SIG management
- Working closely with the Assistant Director, who is developing and managing the new/visiting student orientation, First Year Dialogue, and training programs for student leaders involved in both orientation and First Year Dialogue (FYD). Assist in the delivery of training sessions. Be an active, hands-on member of the orientation team leading up to and during orientation
- Supervise the management of the Al Diwan Student Union facility and programming; work with the Programming Board to streamline event planning across Campus Life
- Convene and cultivate a community of practice among NYUAD administrators who provide leadership related programming. Facilitate knowledge sharing among them. Support the alignment of existing and new undergraduate leadership programs with the goals and principles of NYUAD leadership and in collaboration with NYUNY and NYU Shanghai. Provide technical assistance and/or training as needed to support the enhancement of undergraduate leadership programming. Maintain strong relationships with related units, particularly in Campus Life, and including Student Government
- Establish relationships with counterparts at external entities, including local and regional universities, to deliver collaborative programs and support student and SIG participation
- Cultivate relationships with faculty who teach undergraduate courses. Provide information on effective leadership models in higher education and among students to inform the development of new courses, programs, and curricula. Explore the development of additional curricular offerings on leadership
- Contribute to strategic planning and regular goal setting for Campus Life. Evaluate and report on progress and outcomes of student leadership programming. Contribute to Campus Life budget development and manage budgets related to student leadership programming, including related sponsored programs accounts. Supervise student interns. Build a cohesive team through teambuilding and staff professional development
Education requirements (essential)
- Master’s degree in a related discipline
Experience requirements (essential)
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Higher Education or related field/industry
- Experience supervising professional staff/managing a team
- Knowledge of leadership trends and models; experience and proficiency in implementing leadership and other relevant programming in a higher education setting
- Experience and proficiency in advising students and student groups
- Experience and proficiency in the planning, coordination and implementation of projects and programs
- Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to operating within the sensitivities of a diverse context and culture
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing student leadership programs/models
- Demonstrated success in advising of students and student organizations
- Demonstrated record of effective collaboration with faculty and other colleagues
- Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills
- Good judgment, discretion, independence and initiative
- Effective management of financial, risk, operational and compliance matters
- Ability and willingness to work some evening/weekend hours
Experience requirements (desirable)
- Experience in an international higher education setting
- Experience working with a diverse student population
- Experience and proficiency in student organization and Student Government advising and management
- Knowledge of OrgSync and/or related online community management system
- Experience facilitating dialogue and/or leading facilitator training
