Position Description ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR OF NUTRITION AND EDUCATION/COMMUNICATION. The Food Science and Nutrition Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking a full-time, academic year, tenure-track assistant/associate/full professor in Nutrition beginning September 2018. The candidate should have expertise in human nutrition with demonstrated competence in nutrition education and communication methodologies using current and emerging technologies. Experience in community nutrition working with rural and/or urban populations of diverse social, socio-economic and/or ethnic backgrounds is required. The candidate is expected to promote innovative solutions to the diet-related health issues faced by our society.
The candidate must have strong interest in and commitment to teaching and working with students of different cultural backgrounds. Teaching responsibilities will be in undergraduate and graduate courses that include introductory nutrition, community nutrition, nutrition education and communications, counseling, research methods, and additional courses as needed by the department. Expertise in developing and teaching hybrid/distance courses is desirable. Expectation is to actively participate in the new Masters in Nutrition program.
Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research, student advising, and teaching graduate level courses and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e. research, grant writing, publications, presentations) as part of his/her professional development both inside and outside the university. These scholarly activities should be focused on inclusion of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate is expected to proactively develop collaborations that are intra- and inter-departmental as well as with other colleges and universities, community groups, healthcare institutions and educational environments. The successful candidate is also expected to provide service on committees for the department, college, and university and participate in instructionally related activities. Expectations also include service to local, state, national, and other professional organizations.
Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment is anticipated at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, but appointment at the Full Professor level may be possible for a highly experienced and qualified candidate.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Earned doctorate in Human Nutrition or closely related field. Candidates must be committed to quality undergraduate education and be expected to develop and maintain an active research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
RD/RDN preferable. University-level teaching experience desirable. Evidence of successful academic research, external funding and publication history is advantageous.

The Food Science and Nutrition Department has 16 full-time faculty, numerous part-time faculty, support staff, and approximately 600 majors. FSN offers two majors - Nutrition and Food Science. The department hosts a dynamic and innovative Nutrition program that encourages national as well as international perspectives on teaching and research. The Nutrition curriculum includes two concentrations: Applied Nutrition and Nutrition Science. The Applied Nutrition concentration is accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Food Science program offers an Institute of Food Technologists-approved curriculum.
