Position Description Cal Poly is Seeking a Custodial Operations Support Assistant for University Housing!
The Position: Under the general direction of the Director of Custodial Operations, the Custodial Operations Support Assistant provides clerical, technical, and administrative support functions to the Housing Services Custodial Operations staff (primarily) and all custodial and inventory related services (secondarily); and completion of other related duties and assignments.
The Department: University Housing consists of Housing Administration, Planning and Logistics, and Residential Life & Education, sharing the overall responsibility for serving the on-campus housing program for over 7,200 residents, which includes 3,500 students living in residence halls, 3,700 students in the Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village Apartments; 45 students in Agriculture Housing units; and a summer conference program, housing approximately 16,000 guests annually. The University Housing Department consists of approximately 130 full-time staff, up to 100 part-time staff and 150+ student assistants with an overall annual Departmental operating budget of over $43 million dollars.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Education and Experience: High school diploma or its equivalent. Type 45 wpm. Four years of general office support or technical experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for 6 months of experience)
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials: Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
1. Ability to perform standard business math, track data and make simple projections.
2. Ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility.
3. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications within a diverse population, strong listening and interpretive skills, and the ability to deal positively with unexpected developments and diverse perspectives in and outside the University.
4. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
5. Ability to apply independently a wide variety of policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not exist.
6. Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions.
7. Ability to draft and compose correspondence and standard reports.
8. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
9. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
10. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
11. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
12. Ability and willingness to learn, coordinate, prioritize and monitor complex projects through to completion in support of departmental operations.
13. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
14. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
15. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
1. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
2. Experience with maintaining confidential work-related employee performance data and information.
3. Experience with on-line systems including Student Payroll System, Outlook, Oracle Calendar, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
4. Knowledge concerning on-campus housing and Departmental policies and relay accurate information or providing referrals to students, staff and visitors.
Special Conditions (Staff)

- Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
- Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
- The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
- This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
May be required to complete a Supplemental Employment Application Questionnaire, which contains questions pertaining to conviction history, and submit it when requested by Cal Poly. This disclosure is confidential and will not necessarily preclude applicants from employment.
