Reporting to Head of Science or Deputy Head Academic (Senior School)
Duties & responsibilities - Preparation and setting out of apparatus and materials for science lessons in the laboratories; making up solutions and constructing simple apparatus.
- Offer additional support in clearing up after practical work including washing up and returning equipment to stores, both in and outside of labs. In most cases the pupils are expected to leave their workplace in a reasonably tidy state.
- Responsibility for the orderly storage of apparatus, simple maintenance of equipment (e.g. cleaning of microscopes, checking of electrical items) and stocktaking.
- Organising of repairs and maintenance of equipment, and liaison with Maintenance Department. Including ensuring the Maintenance Department carry out the P.A.T. (portable appliance test) on all electrical appliances.
- Awareness of Health and Safety requirements and safe working practice for self, colleagues and pupils. Maintaining Health and Safety records.
- Photocopying and collation of worksheets, exam papers etc. as time allows.
- Ordering of equipment, chemicals and livestock. (Sometimes materials need to be purchased in/around Dubai.) Administration concerned with ordering e.g. return of faulty equipment, collection of deliveries to the school reception.
- Ordering, upkeep and recording of Science Department text books.
- Maintenance of stocks of living specimens and of potted plants.
- Occasional collection of specimens in and around School grounds.
- Simple microbiology using sterile procedures for classwork.
- Liaising with other departments/ year groups to assist the provision of science throughout the school.
- Assistance with the preparation of materials, demonstrations and exhibits for Open Days and other occasions when the School is on view.
- Performing such other tasks as the Head of Science or Deputy Head may reasonably request.
Hours
The post is a full-time position and the hours will be spread across the three schools of the College as needs dictate.The post holder will be required to be in school from 7.30 through to 4.30 each day and be flexible enough to go beyond this if specific cases require it.
Qualifications Educational background in Science, to diploma or degree level
Previous school experience required
Knowledge - A thorough knowledge of child protection and health and safety procedures
- Knowledge of Science Lab procedures
Experience - Experience of working with children of both sexes aged 3-18
- Minimum 2 years' experience in Science Lab setting
Skills - Excellent communication and listening skills
- Be committed to the concept of inclusive education and to have high expectations of all pupils
- Ability to work well under pressure, exercise thoughtful judgement and display sensitivity.
- Well organised and the ability to maintain appropriate records
- Confident in the use of ICT for record keeping and communication
