Yale-NUS College is Southeast Asia’s premier liberal arts and science institution, and was founded in 2011 as a collaboration between Yale University and National University of Singapore. We are seeking applications for the Dean’s Fellow position from seniors and recent graduates of liberal arts & science colleges. The DF mission statement is: The Dean’s Fellows support students’ personal growth through structured and intentional learning opportunities, foster intercultural community building in the Residential Colleges, and cultivate interconnectedness among students, staff & faculty through associate work and program development.
Responsibilities Dean’s Fellows are guides, mentors, and advisors for the Yale-NUS student body. DFs serve as a role model for students while contributing to the development of the College’s programs and initiatives. The DF position requires a high level of responsibility and flexibility; DFs should expect to have evening, weekend and holiday commitments when students are in residence. Applicant should have high levels of organizational skills and exceptional time management.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
Supervising 2 - 4 Residential College Advisors (student staff who support first-years).
Providing intentional programmatic and tailored support for upper-class students; each DF will be assigned a specific cohort year to support (sophomore, junior, senior).
Provide one-on-one student support, mentoring and advising.
Participation in the on-call duty rotation schedule and providing assistance to students in cases of emergency.
Attending team meetings with individual Residential College teams and the full DF team.
Work 15 - 20 hours per week in various Associate roles in offices across campus.
Assisting with College-wide programs and events throughout the year.
Serve on 2 - 3 Dean of Students Office committees, such as Diversity Week, Room Selection, and Staff Recruitment.
Collaborating across campus to engage in community development within and between the Residential Colleges, including advising student organisations, college councils, and student committees.
Participation in the Dean's Fellow training program and Orientation activities in July/August 2019.
Participating in department-wide professional development ~1 - 3 times per semester.
Full-time residence in one of three Residential Colleges at Yale-NUS.
Administrative duties as assigned.
Associate Positions
In addition to advising and providing support to students, Dean’s Fellows also hold Associate Positions with an additional office in the College. The Associate Position is intended to offer DFs the opportunity to pursue their professional and intellectual interests in such a way that contributes to the broader work of Yale-NUS College. Prior associate roles have included the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Writer's Centre, Wellness, Intercultural Engagement, Residential Life, Student Organisations, CIPE, Arts & Media, Admissions, and Public Affairs. Associate Roles change every year and more information will be shared with selected candidates.
Qualifications We are seeking applicants who have held leadership roles as undergraduates and/or invested themselves in their own college communities. Specific eligibility requirements include:
Recent college graduate with 0-3 years of professional experience. Students graduating in Spring 2019 are encouraged to apply.
A strong interest in the liberal arts and sciences.
Prior experience with student life & residential life (i.e. Residential Advisor, First-Year Counselor, Student Mentorship roles involvement in Multicultural, Diversity and Inclusion Programs, Athletic Teams, Student Gov’t, etc).
Demonstrated leadership experience and an ability to mentor/advise students.
Eagerness to engage with a diverse community across different nationalities, cultures, religions, ethnicities, and beliefs.
Creative and flexible thinker who brings a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Prior international experience is helpful, but not required.
